Nineteen Year Old Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison For Burglary of a Home
Nineteen year old, Steven Demund McKnight was sentenced to eighteen years in prison for committing the offense of home invasion (burglary of a habitation). McKnight
broke into an 83-year-old man's home, threw him to the ground, and robbed him of $90 and a six-pack of beer. The victim was also a Hurricane Katrina survivor. McKnight admitted to being a gang member and had a lengthy
juvenile record--he also apologized to the victim and begged for the jury's mercy.
There are several interesting points to be addressed here. Because McKnight only had a juvenile record was eligible for probation (and no convictions as an adult). That is, instead of being sentenced to serious jail time, he would be on probation reporting to a probation officer. Secondly, Joe Shannon, the elected District Attorney, personally tried the case. This signifies the communities strong interest in assessing a more severe punishment for those who commit this offense. As
home invasions are on the rise, it is very likely that we will see a correlating rise in the severity of punishment of those convicted of the crime.
