Funeral Home Owner Rips Off The .... Living
The owner of a Rhode Island funeral home has been charged with embezzling money from living clients. He is charged with stealing over $27,000 from clients who purchased "pre need" contracts which allow clients to pay for the cost of their own funeral services before they die.
Embezzlement occurs when one person dishonestly or by other unethical means takes and hides assets entrusted to them by an individual or another person. Generally, embezzlement occurs systematically, in small amounts. This allows the embezzler to embezzle for a long period of time.
In order to be found guilty of embezzlement, in general terms, the State must prove that there was a form of
fraudulent conversion of the property of another person by a person who has lawful possession of property. Thus, one has to entrust money to another in a manner that gives that person lawful possession.
